Program Overview

|||||||||||||||||||
|
Industrial engineers help their organization save money and stay competitive by determining how to do things better, safer and more efficiently using engineering processes and systems to improve performance. They are trained as productivity and quality improvement specialists. Industrial engineers work with people and equipment, and spend most of their time in the operating environment developing scientific approaches to problems.
The Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (MSIE) program provides a well-rounded combination of courses in the areas of operations research, statistics, quality assurance, manufacturing, management, production, simulation and human factors/ergonomics. The program features an area of concentration in operations research. The average time students need to complete the program is 18 to 24 months.
In addition to separate degree programs in law and industrial engineering, St. Mary's University Law School and Graduate School offer a joint program that leads to the degrees of Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) and the MSIE. The joint degree program allows students to complete the requirements for both degrees in three to four years.

Admissions

|
Admission is granted only to those with high promise for success in graduate study. Applicants demonstrate this potential through previous academic records and testing. To be considered for admission to the MSIE program, an applicant must fulfill the following: •Have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in engineering, the physical sciences or mathematics. Students with a degree in other disciplines may be admitted on a contingency basis provided they complete prerequisite courses including engineering calculus I and II, probability and statistics, and engineering programming. •Have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 (A=4.00) in their BS degree; and a minimum quantitative graduate record examination (GRE) score of 600; Applicants who fail to meet any of the above standards may be admitted on a conditional basis. The graduate programs director evaluates these cases on an individual basis. •International students must submit a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 213 on the computer-based test, 550 on the paper-based test, or 79 on the Internet-based test. •Submit a completed application form, a written statement of purpose indicating the applicant's interests and objectives, two letters of recommendation, and official transcripts of all college level work. Admission is granted only to those with high promise for success in graduate study. Applicants demonstrate this potential through pervious schooling and testing. St. Mary's University has a rolling admission policy. However, priority is given to students who complete the application procedures early. Although not required, all graduate students are encouraged to participate in a campus visit and an interview with an admissions counsellor. | |||||||||||||||||||

In order to receive aid from federal student financial aid programs, MSIE students must be citizens or eligible non-citizens of the United States with a valid Social Security number. They must also register or have registered for selective service if they are male and between the ages of 18 and 25, have made satisfactory academic progress, not be in default on any previous student loans and not owe any money on a federal student grant, and demonstrate financial need.
Eligibility for funding from the Federal Stafford Loan requires students to be enrolled in at least four credit hours per semester. Limited grant funding may also be available through the state's Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) program. TEG awards are limited to Texas residents who are enrolled in nine credit hours. There are a limited number of assistantships available to students.

Industrial engineering students benefit from the use of engineering laboratories during their studies at St. Mary's University. The labs are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The university's research laboratory is used by undergraduate and graduate students for academic related activities such as research and project completion. This lab has UNIX and windows work stations and servers.
The manufacturing and robotics lab features robotic systems and many sensory systems and computers. This lab also provides a framework for merging concepts from the fields of CAD/CAM, automation and manufacturing engineering. St. Mary's University campus, located in beautiful San Antonio, TX, also includes several residence buildings, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a stadium, an arena, an amphitheatre, a chapel and other recreational venues that help add to the full student experience.
